Post by yellow »

Welcome to the Handgun Buyer's Checklist — a community resource thread for anyone buying, trading, or selling handguns on Yellowhammer Trader.

Before you hand over cash or finalize a trade, run through this checklist:

Pre-Purchase Checklist

1. Verify the Seller

Check their forum history and post count

Look for positive feedback in their profile

Ask for a phone number and verify it
2. Inspect the Firearm

Check the serial number — make sure it's not scratched off or altered

Cycle the action — does it function smoothly?

Check barrel for excessive wear, pitting, or bulges

Inspect the frame for cracks or welds

Check the rifling — shine a light down the barrel

Look for excessive wear on the feed ramp

Test the safety and trigger pull

Check the magazine — does it lock back on empty?

Inspect the slide-to-frame fit (for semi-autos)

Check the cylinder gap and timing (for revolvers)
3. Paperwork & Legal

Alabama does not require firearm registration

Private sales between residents are legal without an FFL

You must verify the buyer/seller is an Alabama resident and not prohibited

Bill of sale recommended — include date, names, make/model, serial number, and signatures

You can request to see a valid AL driver's license or pistol permit

It is illegal to sell to someone you know is prohibited from owning a firearm
4. Price Check

Compare to GunBroker sold listings (not asking prices)

Check the Yellowhammer Trader archives for similar listings

Factor in condition, accessories, and ammo included

NIB (New In Box) commands a premium over "like new"
Red Flags — Walk Away If...

Serial number is scratched, filed, or altered

Seller won't let you inspect the firearm

Seller pressures you to rush the deal

Price is way below market value

Seller refuses to show ID or meet in a public place

The firearm has been reported stolen — check HotGunz.com
Tips for a Smooth Transaction

Meet in a public, well-lit place — many Alabama police stations allow transfers in their parking lot

Bring a friend

Count your cash before handing over the firearm

Take photos of the firearm and serial number before the deal

Trust your gut — if something feels off, walk away
